Right. A lot of those uses are personal, ie shampoo, body wash, toothpaste. I find Dr. Bronner's really shine with household uses. According to their website, here's the original list of uses:

Dr. Bronner's version:

Always dilute for Shave-Shampoo-Massage-Dental Soap-Bath!

Peppermint is nature's own unsurpassed fragrant Deodorant!

A drop is best Mint Toothpaste; brushes Dentures Clean!

A dash in water is the ideal Breath Freshener & Mouth Wash!

Peppermint Oil Soap for Dispensers, Uniforms, Baby, Beach!

Dilute for ideal After Shave, Body Rub, Foot Bath, Douche.

Hot Towel-Massage the entire body, always towards your heart.

Pets, silk, wool & body tingles head to toe - keeps cool!

3 dashes in water rinse most Sprays Off fruit & vegetables!

1/4 oz in qt H2O is Pest Spray! Dash, no rash Diaper-Soap!

And a ton of those uses are great, but I have my own notes and observations on a lot of these uses.

I've used this as a shaving soap, and it as well as any other soap.

Not sure if I should be rubbing it on my pits or what, but I've found that the peppermint is fragrant but not overpowering.

I've tried a drop of peppermint soap on my toothbrush, and its incredibly soapy. It'll do in a pinch, but its like having a bar of soap in your mouth.

I would use their soap for all these uses, but on a baby I would make sure to dilute more than usual for their delicate skin.

Douching is all around wrong. Don't do it.

Intend to try this out as a massage.

Would make sure that the essential oil in the soap won't affect the pets, however, I'd try the baby version to be on the safe side.

Make sure to rinse very well.

Soap and water in a spray bottle: great spray for pants. Damn the aphids!

I suppose that, compared to chemical based cleaners, Dr. Bronner's won't work as well, but I don't want to need to wear rubber gloves to clean my bath tub, and I don't want to need to keep the window open to keep from breathing in fumes.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32369224.post-7882435426346576052010-05-04T15:23:00.003-04:002010-05-04T15:34:52.152-04:00New BangsI recently got a haircut, and now my hair is somewhere between this:

and this:

Only my non-bang hair is a lot like Bettie's. Let's not judge, people. I didn't tell the woman wielding the scissors how much to cut, I just told her I wanted a trim and she hacked my hair away.

They're not even cut that straight. >_> I had to go back to have a different stylist even out the crookedness, which ended up making the bangs that much shorter. The trouble is that my preferred hairstyle is a ponytail. I hate having my hair down, but it just looks better that way right now. Just my luck that its started to get hot and humid already.

Oh well, 3 more weeks and they'll be a normal person's length. Hopefully.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32369224.post-79228996270705010882010-04-29T01:33:00.006-04:002010-04-30T00:42:07.216-04:00Dr Bronner'sLet me just start by saying that I love Dr Bronner's soap. I would have multiple liters of it if I could afford it right now, scattered all around the house, depending on what I wanted to use it for. And I use it for practically everything.

I went to WholeFoods on Houston St. to check out their selection to see what scent I wanted to try since I basically finished off their citrus one. Incidentally, the prices there were not as high as I thought they might be. The produce, at least, was comparable to my regular supermarkets. So I was on the second floor, trying to figure out where the soaps were (past the protein bars and supplements), when I found what I think is a new scent. Rose! It actually has a very soft scent, not like overly artificial rose, almost sweet in a way. I picked up 8 oz for $6, iirc, and I definitely want to buy more to keep in the bathroom.

From what I've been able to figure out from my own use, and from reviews I've read, this is a quick list for what each scent does:

Peppermint - Good for oily skin, also makes your skin tingle after showers, so good in the summertime. Supposedly peppermint oil is an anti-inflammatory, so that's cool I guess.

Almond - This is good for dry skin, and is more moisturizing. I've never used this one because I don't like the smell, but I'll pick it up because my face gets dry.

Tea Tree Oil - As a shampoo, helps with dandruff, also good for acne on face and body, albeit a bit drying. Also good on oily skin. I use it as a shampoo >_>

Lavender - Calming, I suppose? I'm not a fan of lavender that much, and this one smells strong! Apparently good for acne as well.

Eucalyptus - Good for when you're sick! Take a hot bath with this and inhale the fumes to clear out your sinuses. :D I love eucalyptus tea when I'm sick, it just makes me feel better. Also an anti-inflammatory.

Baby - Their mildest, basically good for people who react to fragrances and essential oils.

Citrus - It smells like oranges. I don't know what to tell you other than that. Although, I have read that citrus oils are generally disliked by mosquitoes and their demonic ilk.

Rose - Smells like rose water! I'm not sure if it'll actually do anything for my skin, but smelling like a flower I actually like the scent of (not lavender! ugh!) is enough for me.

And I think that's it. A word of caution: Don't use this stuff at full strength, or if you do, measure how much you use in DROPS. It's very concentrated, and most people use, at the least a 3 to 1 water to soap ratio with their face and body washes.
For me, I take a few drops and rub them on my hands then into my hair for shampoo, or a few in the center of my scrubby and work up a lather for a body wash. Since its a SLS free soap, it won't lather up as much as regular soaps that most are used to, so keep that in mind.

Next time I write about Dr Bronner's, I list the ways I use it around the house, and generally I find that any of their varieties works fine all over the place in that regard.

Happy washing!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32369224.post-7951494548082063642010-04-24T13:06:00.002-04:002010-04-29T01:28:40.504-04:00IronyI don't quite understand ironic tees. Sure, they're ironic in the Alanis Morisette sense of the word, which is in no way whatsoever, but they're not at all ironic in English.

I went to the new Ricky's on Steinway for some empty bottles for lotion and makeup. Its different from the other ones I've been to since there's a lot more space to move around and a salon in the back. It has everything else all other stores have, too. A Queens location is a lot more convenient for me. Sure wish they sold NYX makeup though. That would be the bee's knees.

So anyway, empty bottles. I recently found my match for Revlon's colorstay foundation (MUFE HD foundation didn't work out) but it has one huge problem that I hate: its a pour bottle. So I picked up some squeezy bottles. I couldn't find really small ones like I wanted, but I hope the ones I got will work out.

Also picked up some tiny spray bottles for, you know, water, Fix+, etc. Makes for cute little extras for makeup swaps.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32369224.post-7308963277689752742010-04-19T16:03:00.005-04:002010-04-19T19:20:09.132-04:00Unemployment

Of course, I am looking for jobs, but when you really aren't sure what you want to do with your life, its just a numbing expanse of roads to go down, all with their own cliffs to jump off of. (That metaphor was weird, make one up in your head that works.)

I made a call to a temp agency today, and left a voicemail. No call back, but fortune favors the bold, right? Calling back tomorrow, and calling a few other places. Only one interview so far, and it seems to have gone no where.

So most of my time at home is spent online basically. Why watch tv when Hulu is just so simple? I can watch Archer without even having cable. Yayyy me. FYI, Archer is hilarious. Watch it.

On that note, I watched Kick-Ass this weekend. There were good parts and bad, but overall I liked it. It was better, by far, than Burton's Alice in Wonderland, and that's being nice. It was nice to see a movie that wasn't full of famous faces for once, too. Hit Girl pushes the boundaries in terms of being a strong female character that wasn't sexualized as heck. And, let's face it, Kick Ass was adorable. (He's 19, I'm not creepy!)

Currently trying out a sample of MUFE's HD foundation in 120, but I'm slightly worried it might be too yellow. Yes, I'm using a luxury (imo) makeup brand when I'm unemployed, shut up it was a free sample. I have enough for a few more applications and I'm going out the next two days, so time will tell if it breaks me out and how it wears over the day. Going to pick up some Monistat anti-chafe gel, to use as a primer (it works, can't argue with results) because I've been wearing it over my (admittedly) heavy moisturizer and I think I'm looking a little shiny.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32369224.post-39389556937601280452010-04-01T17:47:00.003-04:002010-04-02T23:51:12.023-04:00Last time on P&PG...Since the last update I:
-quit both my jobs
-moved back with my mom in nyc
-hate my life

All my knitting stuff is packed in a box that I won't have access to until R and I get our own place so that's an extra incentive to race towards getting a job. If nothing else it'll get me out of my mother's which is not a place I enjoy being by any means. Oh, and lucky me, I moved back home the same week she decided to take off work. Do you know how awesome it is to be trapped with my mother for a week? I'm ready to kill myself.

Unluckily, I have no savings to speak of. All my money is going towards student loans, cc bills, and my phone. Which aren't at all unmanageable, but there's no income. So I guess they kind of are. I was supposed to get a few hundred dollars from my tax refund - except my father claimed me as a dependent. Really fucking fantastic. Now I owe $170! Thanks dad!

Went to PAX last weekend. It was fantastic! Saw only a few cosplayers but they weren't horrific and a few were quite good. Played a few cool games that aren't out yet, got some cool shirts and bags and looking forward to next years PAX East. Maybe next time I'll get Will Wheaton's autograph.

YeahhhhhUnknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32369224.post-34630299248908240522010-02-20T15:25:00.002-05:002010-02-22T23:05:17.308-05:00Reading Vogue - I wrote this on saturdayI picked up the latest copy of Vogue today - for Tina Fey of course, and out of the whole magazine I have exactly one thing thats featured: my Blackberry Curve. Incidentally, I'm writing this on that same phone. Its purple. :)
I have determined, after lusting past 300+ pages, that I need new shoes, a bag, and a cute jacket. God knows I'm not switching jeans. The ones I have (that actually fit) hide my muffin top. HG material right there.
Which reminds me, I need belts.
I have been putting off calling up the long list of temp agencies I have in the city but I have a full day off to do it. So I have to email resumes, call people up, and hope for appointments to be set up. Preferably on easy to access subway lines.
A no-image post today.
Sent from my Verizon Wireless BlackBerryUnknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32369224.post-81316262037521251032009-12-31T23:19:00.001-05:002009-12-31T23:21:22.679-05:002009 Things about 2009 I learned or thought about or should do (not really more like 100)

1. Of course, the gift are always beautiful and/or useful, but more often than not they're for that twenty to thirty-something that actually managed to find a job out of college and is making enough money to live in a home with working insulation and a refrigerator that isn't held together by duct tape. But I digress.

The guides will be divided into parts, Under 100, Under 50, Under 20, and so on, and the gifts will get more and more useless and un-gifty as the price goes down. "Oh, a set of napkin rings? You shouldn't have. Really." Really great stuff.

This year everyone on my list is getting my handmade stuff. Lip balms, knitted hats and gloves, Christmas cards that were on sale. Or left over from last year. If I could afford it, I would give people books, but I already owe a few hundred on my credit card, and more than 6k in student loans. My family can suffer as much as I am. Which isn't to say that a few people aren't getting nice things. I knit pretty well and it's going to be wool, so they're getting good stuff. And I did spend some money over all. This is probably my most stressful Christmas yet.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32369224.post-35975764725287422752009-11-15T12:00:00.001-05:002009-11-15T12:00:18.413-05:00This MorningThis morning I woke up 4 minutes early. That might not seem like much, but I treasure every moment I am asleep, and I would have enjoyed those minutes if THE CAT WOULD JUST LEAVE ME BE. If we don't feed her early enough, she has a whole process for getting one of us to get up. First she will jump on me and sit on my bladder. If I roll over, like today, she'll jump on the entertainment system and start chewing on my plants. When that did nothing but make me yell at her from bed, she went to the dining room and jumped on the table. So I got up, gave her a tray of kibble, and went to do my bathroom thing.

But that was not good enough, and she followed me around as I made my coffee, chirping, squeaking, and sighing. I GET IT, PASSIVE AGGRESSIVE CAT, I GET IT. So she got her half-can of wet food, with some l-lysine mixed in. Now she's all, I'm a cat, sitting in the sun, I'm licking my snatch to clean myself, hur hur hur.

Once in a while, I'll yell near her, "I know you're actually a person stuck in a cat's body." No response yet, but I'm confident.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32369224.post-6352430502966522532009-11-02T18:00:00.000-05:002009-11-02T18:00:00.293-05:00Evangeline GlovesI wish there was some sort of app for the iPod touch, where I could just, like, type up a draft of a post and then save it to look over and post later. I guess you could say that's the email application, but I have more than 50 unfinished homeworks in my draft box, and I graduated college 6 months ago. I don't really see myself going back to that folder to do any cleaning.

Heck.

I'm changing the name of the blog to my two favorite things, two things that are quite important to me, for reasons I'm not really sure about. Perhaps it's the efficiency inherent in both worlds. And by worlds, I don't really mean worlds. My pockets end up (more often than not) being a traveling garbage receptacle. As I write this I have no idea what is actually in my pockets. Sometimes I find money. Those are good days.

I love parking complexes. That's all I have to say about that, because if I start talking about how useful they are, I'll never stop.

I had about $4.30 in my paypal account, from God knows what at this point, so I bought the pattern for Evangeline on ravelry for $3 Canadian (2.96). I liked the long version of the gloves, but let's face it, when am I really going to wear gloves that long. I am not crazy enough to wear short sleeves here until May. Maybe. Anyway, the short version was just a little too short for my liking, so I added an extra cable repeat, and I ended up with two gloves I really like, and a few yards of Wool of Andes its possible that I will never use.

They still need to get blocked. It's been getting cold, so I've been picking them as they get their red blush all over, and put them in paper bags. It seems to go quicker, and I'm impatient for tomatoes.

I don't think I'll have enough for sauce and salad, unless the tomato plants hold out a little longer, but whatever, I learned a lot, and I know how to not eff up so much next year. It was starting to get crowded so I moved a few plants around. And took a pot of catnip outside to sit on my porch. In retrospect, I probably should have remembered about the stray cats that wander around this neighborhood, either way, my catnip had been getting more and more beaten up for a few days, and I wasn't sure why or how.
That is, until Richard and I got home late one night and saw a shadow run across the porch and jump down off the porch. At first I thought it was a raccoon, then Richard and I saw the outline of a cat, and in whatever light the moon was giving, we could both tell it was a grey cat.
Since then I've seen the cat once again, hanging out in the daytime near our fence. I'm not sure how I should feel about this cat. If it is a stray, and is tame, I would like to catch it and take it to the vet, to get fixed and whatnot, but I don't want to take a chance that this cat belongs to someone.

At the very least, the scent of a cat on my porch has been keep small woodland creatures away. The four of them are still split into three cages, but instead of being on a dresser in the dining room, they're now on a plain black desk. We bought new chewy wood houses for them, and at this point the houses are about 50% gone. (Remind me to buy more apple twigs, brain.)

Cookie the cat left with my neighbors at the end of May, and I miss her terribly. The squirrels continue to irritate me, and there's an upcoming post on a new intruder to the porch area: a grey stray cat.

I got a new job (actually two) that I'm starting on Thursday~ yay ~so that means.... nothing actually. This is the largest tomato on all four of my tomato plants. After I plucked off all of the diseased fruits and wept, the plant developed a lot of new flowers, that have already started budding into tiny fruits. I have lots of new tomatoes, none of which is suffering from even the early stages of BER. Yay!
I amended the soil with some old compost I had, bone meal, egg shells, and a small amount of unflavored gelatin, which my mother recommended.

I've changed the image hosting to picasa for the blog. I recently installed it on my computer and now I'm wondering whyyy I never looked into it before. However, I think I will keep using Flickr for other photos for the time being. And it doesn't help that I wake up late, well after the sun has started to heat the soil in my pots, and the water dries up.
This is good experience for future tomato growing endeavors, but for now, it's so disheartening, seeing all those tiny tomatoes, with black soft spots on the bottom. No, I'm not being melodramatic.
Perhaps I should buy one of those bulb waterers they show on tv? I tried, I really did, for more than a year, but the environment of all things, got the best of me.
I live in an area of NY that, between June and September is either humid and hot, or raining and hot. The rest of the year it usually freezes over, so I was constantly struggling with compost that was frozen, or too wet, or infested with fungus gnats. There was never a good time for my compost bins, no matter how much brown I added to cover it up. Sure, it broke down, but what use do I have for it, if it is swarming with gnats. I am a container gardener, and while the compost would probably work in someones veggie garden in their backyard, it simply didn't work when all I had was potted herbs and some flowers.
So, I dug a hole in a corner of the backyard (I rent, and live on the second floor of a house split into 4 apartments) and dumped the compost in there, and covered it up with the dirt I had dug up. The compost that went in smelled and was buggy. Ugh! It was too hard to do it, what with living in an apartment and having very little access to workable browns (ie, grass clippings, dead leaves, hay).
Vermicomposting, while very interesting, isn't an option in this household. My fiance is openly hateful towards worms, and avoids them on sidewalks. Don't ask me why, I have no idea there. It also seemed quite difficult, to me. I was unsure where exactly I was going to be able to sort the compost without terrifying the man, and what if I missed the tiny eggs while I was sorting? Is it ok to have worms in my tiny containers? Nothing I read on the subject really shed any light on that, and I figure they're writing more towards people who have room to garden.
On that note, the worms in the bins do reproduce and grow in numbers, and what was I going to do with the excess? Give it to bait shops? Save it for the day the man pisses me off enough that I resort to covering his side of the bed with worms? I figure that would be more than I really wanted from compost.
I hope I didn't scare anyone away from composting because it really is a great way to reduce the amount of garbage that leaves your household, but in my case, it just didn't work.

No photos this time around.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32369224.post-87011173458754510212009-03-28T22:47:00.000-04:002009-03-28T23:03:45.944-04:00Spring 09

The tomato I first planted in late January has been coming along, albeit not without some struggle. It's been transplanted into a bigger container and already has quite a few leaves, as you can see in the first photo. However, I might have been a little heavy handed with the fertilizer I added and might have burned the early leaves a little bit (photo 3).

The violet blooms are my biggest surprise of the season. When we bought the plant about a year ago it bloomed for a few weeks, then went dormat for a while, with nice dark green leaves. When it started blooming a few weeks ago, I was super surprised. It's been a very low maintenance plant, thus far.

Next Update: Chamomile Seedling & My CompostUnknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32369224.post-4514043433206454032009-01-23T12:12:00.000-05:002009-01-23T12:15:04.124-05:00Fighting the Winter Blues

This is an experiment in winter gardening. I'm so exasperated by all the cold around here that I just had to do it, to hell with conventional seed starting dates. In my defense, though, it's highly probable that none of these plants will ever live full time outside. Except for maybe the tomatoes. (Yes, I planted tomatoes mid-January, sue me, it's boring here.)

There's basil, oregano, chamomile, tomatoes, and catnip. In retrospect I probably should have labeled the containers, but for a few of them its too late, and their seeds were too microscopic too identify now. The tomatoes are in the toilet paper roll though.

Everything, as you can see, is edible. Except for the catnip, which is going to be harvested and dried and stuffed into hand-made cat toys. If I could have a cat I would do it in a second, but Richard's allergic. The joke's on him, though, I'm allergic to dogs.

If this winter garden fails, I lost out on a few seeds, but I'll just toss the stuff into my compost pile. Otherwise, I'm going to eat like a queen, and the next door neighbor's cats are going to be the happiest fatties around.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0
